Dear HR, know your Boundaries!

 
HR is not the people's DOCTOR!

 

As HR, we are referred to by numerous job titles, but, being circumspect is very critical when discharging our strategic and operational functions in relation to the role.

 

Your job is, 'people manager; not a physician'.

 

I have experienced an instance where HR administered medication to a staff under the guise of 'First Aid' treatment and by the time the ailing employee eventually visited the clinic for a proper consultation, it was discovered the medication he took had further escalated the ailment. The medication had to be flushed out of his system before proper treatment could begin. We could only thank God that the staff stayed alive.

 

Often times, HR is of the assumption that their job as a people manager encapsulates administrating treatments to all employee's problems. Doing this could lead to more problems especially when it has to do with health and personal issues.

 



Proffer advice, hire in-house professionals or retain consultants to attend to these issues.

 

You are not all knowing. Save yourself from unnecessary law suits or endangering the life of your workforce.
